INTRODUCTION
 
The Regional Institute of English, formerly called the Punjab Institute of English, was established in 1963 under a scheme of the Government of India for qualitative improvement in the teaching of English, particularly at the secondary school level. Today it caters to the English Language Teaching (ELT) needs of the northern region of the country comprising of four states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
 
OBJECTIVES
 
•  To prepare teachers and teacher educators

•  To build a cadre of trained teachers of English at primary, secondary and senior secondary level

•  To raise the standards of English teaching in the four northern states of India and UT Chandigarh

•  To undertake research into English language teaching problems in the northern region

•  To prepare sets of material, teaching manual to be used in the schools of the northern region
 

The objectives mentioned above are realized through conducting

 
SHORT TERM COURSES / WORKSHOPS / SEMINARS
 

•  Workshops for primary, middle, secondary, Sr. secondary and College teachers in various areas of ELT

•  Intensive training courses for resource persons

•  Refresher courses for the ex-participants of the Institute

•  Re-orientation course for teachers of English in In-service Training Centres

•  Refresher courses for College lecturers in English

•  Refresher courses for lecturers in English in B.Ed Colleges

•  Seminar for English language teachers in identifying, handling and teaching children with special needs

•  Bridge courses for foreign scholars sponsored by the Government of India

•  Courses in English for specific purposes (special need-based courses)

•  Orientation Courses for teachers of English in tribal areas

•  Short term courses for teachers of Kendriya Vidyalaya / Navodaya Vidyalayas

•  District level courses for the faculty of the District In-service Training Centres

•  Conducting National / International Conferences/ Seminars in issues related to ELT

Over the years the Institute has trained about 12000 secondary grade and senior secondary grade teachers; 500 primary school teachers, and 50 college teachers under various schemes and has produced materials like textbooks, audio cassettes, CDs and training material useful for promoting language teaching and learning.
