The basic mandate of the Institute is teacher-training and it caters to the six northern states of India. The Institute also has trained teachers from countries such as Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nigeria, etc.

RIE has been collaborating with various agencies such as The British Council, RELO India, NCERT, Samaghra Shiksha for its Teacher Training programmes. Currently, RIE is running two online teacher -training programmes:
