  RESEARCH

A significant addition to the functioning of the Institute's academic wing is focus on research projects. The Institute collaborates with universities and state governments in research projects.

The various projects are:
  • Speaking in English Programme SIEP with SSA Chandigarh Administration
  • Reading and English Acquisition Programme REAP with SSA Chandigarh Administration
  • English Language Improvement Programmes ELIPS with SSA Chandigarh Administartion

Speaking in English Program (SIEP)

SIEP aims at enhancing the oral/ aural skills of teachers and to enable them to take up listening and speaking activities with the children. Using doorstep education model, teachers are given training in their schools to teach students oral skills. The training module includes activities such as language games, story-telling, nursery rhymes, picture description, etc for children. It is assumed that appropriate use of the module in the classroom will ensure language acquisition by children

Reading and English Acquisition Program (REAP)

On the recommendation of the NCERT, REAP has been designed to teach children to read. Reading as a process implies that we use different strategies for reading different texts. Through a guided programme which includes a variety of texts such as storybooks, comics, maps and textbooks, teachers can promote reading skills and build a habit of reading among students. Once again, doorstep education is adopted as the mode of delivery

This project was in collaboration with the SSA, UT Chandigarh. The objective of this project is to:

  • enable young learners of government model and non-model schools of UT Chandigarh in developing reading habits.
  • learners are encouraged to read stories in English everyday and discuss the key features.

The project was launched in 41 model schools targeting 3478 learners.

English Language Improvement Programme - ELIPS

This project was in collaboration with the SSA, UT Chandigarh. The project aims at
  • developing interactive teaching and learning material based on the textbooks prescribed for Class I & II
  • A primer is prepared for Class I of government model and non-model schools
A team of 24 teachers was drawn from various model and non-model schools to produce material appropriate to the needs and level of the learners.
